A Gentle Reframe On Moving More
Plus: Happy Season Premiere of The Bear to All Who Celebrate!
I recently wrote about my love-hate relationship with exercise. And guess what? Nothing has changed. However, a teeny tiny shift in mindset is happening, which I consider to be a win.
I recently attended a virtual panel I discovered through
of , whom I’ve written about all over this newsletter! It was called The Summer Support Anti-Diet Panel, and Dacy was one of four experts in their field discussing how to cope with the anxiety warmer weather brings for those struggling with body image (having to wear less clothes, etc.). One of the experts was - who you can learn more about here.As their website states, “Hannah is a body liberation coach committed to supporting folks who feel left out of, or harmed by, mainstream fitness offerings.” I absolutely loved what Hannah stands for and had to say, so I got in touch with them and scheduled a consultation call. They’re quite busy, however, so the call is actually this evening! In the meantime, I joined their community - Body Liberation Playground - a lovely space full of incredibly supportive people who are all trying to figure out our relationship with movement.
I decided to be vulnerable and throw a question out into the forum: “Today, my day got away from me, and I wasn’t able to fit in movement like I’d planned. I don’t want to feel guilty, but I do. Anyone relate?”
I LOVED Hannah’s reply, in which they said one of the reasons they feel happy to have moved is they then feel more confident with their body image, even though their body size isn’t changing; it’s just that they sense their internal environment differently.
Well, I’ll. Be. Damned! THAT is exactly the encouragement I need in order to move more.
Ya know what DOESN’T encourage me to move more? The following:
- Doctors telling me to exercise for forty-five minutes, five days a week. That seems unrealistic, and also makes me feel like I’m doing something wrong if I skip a day.
- Celebrities/anyone else posting their diet and exercise programs on social media.
- Teachers in exercises classes yelling at me: “COME ON! It’s bathing suit season! Do you want that beach body? Feel that burn! Your muscles should be shaking! No pain, no gain!”
- Influencers posting Before and After pictures.
- Medical experts giving statistics that seem to come from a place of intimidation: “If you don’t exercise [this way], you’ll [get this disease/have a shorter life expectancy/etc.].”
- People in the front row of spin class. You know who I’m talking about. 😒
Ya know what DOES encourage me to move more? HANNAH’S COMMENT. The idea of sensing my internal environment differently MAKES SENSE to me. I WANT to feel good in my body, but if the only way to get there is by having to do these PUNISHING workouts almost every day, it ain’t gonna happen! However, if I’m encouraged to be in tune with how I feel as a result of the movement, and if I’m told it doesn’t have to be punishing but that it can be joyful instead (i.e. a pole dancing class as Caraline suggested in last week’s BodyPop Questionnaire, instead of forty-five minutes of torture on a treadmill), I’ll more than likely feel the urge to move. I’ve been trying to incorporate physical activity into my life for over forty years, and it hasn’t happened yet. This gentle reframe may be exactly what I needed.
THIS WEEK’S BRAIN CANDY 🍭
Should I get into Bridgerton? A friend of mine said watching it is like “snarfing down a box of macaroons,” which kinda sold me! Plus, I’m ALL ABOUT Nicola Coughlan’s response to a (female!!!) reporter’s question about her “bravery” in showing her body in the infamous mirror scene:
@poliniverse"You know it is hard because I think a women with my body type - woman with perfect breasts" Nicola Coughlan you are a world treasure ❤️ Luke's reaction tho 😂 #nicolacoughlan #lukenewton #polin #penelopefeatherington #colinbridgerton #ladywistledown #lordwhistledown #bridgerton #bridgertonnetflix #bridgertonseason3Tiktok failed to load.

You NEED to get into Bridgerton!!
On your note, recently I was on a fitness class and the teacher told the class, Come on ladies, lets get that bikini body ready for summer! And when I tell you most of the women in the class scoffed in disapproval!!! I loved witnessing that! There's a definite shift in discourse. Slowly but surely we'll get there.
I hope you try a pole class if you’re interested! And I hope you tell us about it.
For what it’s worth: I loved the first season of Bridgerton and have not been able to get into the rest of it. 🥴
